  • Scope and Content
Glad Grantham taking note about the drinking water vessels. Supposes it only in summer that it is brought up in a copper bottle. Mr. Monmorin's watch; perhaps too late to prevent bell from being sonorous. Condolences for diminution of Grantham's toupee; present fashion extravagent. "In other parts of dress there is a rather an affectation of negligence & men go to the Opera in plain frocks & white waistcoats". Fritz wore Vicuna frock with a white waistcoat & black sattin breeches. Cares little for Grantham's hair so long as he has good health. "As for horns you must take your chance, we may well say now Que Cornucopia's. (It is highly patriotick in M____n if he favours the Masserana Vicit amor partrai).’’ Likes account of new Swedes etc... Sale of Grantham's Coach in Spain; fair price, glad of decision, didn't think he'd get full price he paid for it. Arrangements for which debt to pay off with proceeds, arrears at Almack's etc... Doesn't want Draper to know of these demands. Laments once more their separation. Loves the children equally [Jack & Theresa Parker], little girl not his favourite. Very alike, girl imitates the boy etc... Dined at Mr. Parker's with Lord Courtney, Lord George Cavendish, Mr. Fortescue, Mr. Walpole & Dick Thompson. Comments on each. "Contest between the Cavendish & the Macarony will come to a Crisis, the odds are upon Cavendish." Dick Thompson has lost all his fortune. Dined at Lord Poulett’s with Nanny, Lady Susan, Mr. Anne, Mr. & Mrs. Kelly & Miss Parker etc... Supped at Stratton St. Tom [Pelham] very gay at Brighthelmstone, assembly every night and ladies enough for a dance once a week. Harry with him. Dined at Mr. Aislabie’s with Nanny. Former looking well. Less able to walk than when Fritz left England. Mrs. Aislabie "living on the borders of the beau monde & thinking herself in the midst of it". Fritz sometimes concerned at this type of comment falling into other hands! Queen's House. One of Uncle Jemmy's sons is going to sea. Dr. Smith gave account of the younger who is at Westminster. Grantham owes Aunt a letter "in her situation one would not choose that she should entertain a suspicion of neglect". Lord Suffolk's death; his successor may be Lord Stormont or Lord Hilsborough. Lady Suffolk bore only one child who died very young with symptoms of Gout. Lord Aylesford will probably marry Miss Thynne, he lives almost entirely with Lord Weymouth. Encloses a shade "need not I hope say who it....represents". Children [Jack & Theresa Parker] haven't sat for their picture recently due to a cold. Lord Percy to marry Miss Burrel. Duke & Duchess of Hamilton are to part, his temper intolerable "quid enin satone ternenus Aut pelimus". Envies Escarano leaving for Spain this morning. Shadwell doesn't remember name of ship carrying red & blue cloth or that the arrangements were left to him. Perhaps Diego knows. Catolica's appointment to be Cavallerizo Mayor would be invidious. Senor Elizabeth will expect to succeed Losada if he should outlive him.
