  • Scope and Content
Tom Pelham is better, an acrimonious disposition in his blood is being cared for. Did not attend Lady Middleton's wedding. Lord Middleton out of town to visit father. Would like to see the Plateau, assumes Grantham unequal to a perspective view of it with figures, etc.... Unnecessary to feel afraid of being thought unsociable when returned to England as there is less confinement with respect to eating & drinking than there used to be and also Fritz is convinced Grantham's former appetite will return. Lord Carlisle desires this to be communicated. Saw Demofouente[?] again performed at Opera. First time he saw it was with Draper when Riccarelli took the part. Glad Grantham's two dishes of tea did no harm. If Fritz drinks it prevents sleep or he wakes with sudden jumps "the only leaps I take in bed". Will order Monmourin’s watch from Elliott in city, he made Dr. Luis's. Has as high a reputation as any maker in England. Disapproves of Grantham eating salt Salmons, Herrings & Cods. Pleased at him having spoken to Galvez about Diego, recommends Grantham sees something done about him. Paying the current expenses of the month out of the money taken up at the end of it, it is a great task. Hopes he will soon be enabled to pay what he calls the Anticipation box. Dined at Lord Pelham's, went to an Assembly at Mrs. Aislabie's, played two Pooles at Commerce with Mrs. Harcourt, Lady Chesterfield, Miss Thistlethwaite, Miss Elwell & a Mr. Vincent. Won both Pooles. Mrs. Harcourt enquired after Grantham, she is very handsome and knows it etc... Lost a third Poole with some older Ladies. Several `Cats' made enquiries about Grantham supposes they are the "venerable remains of my Aunt Worsley's Coterie". Lady Stapylton, thought dead long ago, has invited Fritz to dine, "dead mice & gingerbread". Mrs. Aislabie lost the great Cedar at Hendon in the high wind. Above 900 trees blown down at Castle Howard. Horses have arrived. At the Drawing Room the King said he was perfectly satisfied with his. If there are no commands from General Carpenter the sooner Manuel returns the better. Cloth to come up from Exeter by the Diligence. Dined with Mr. Mogrey at Lincoln's Inn Fields. Mrs. Mogrey's younger brother has written some sonnets to a Miss Palmer, niece to Sir Joshua who has refused him. Queen not present at Drawing Room. Few people finer than Lady Middleton there. More expense in trimmings than stuffs of Lady's gowns, etc... Men's clothes mainly dark Velvets or Sattins etc... Boothby's was the prettiest coat. Saw Carlisle, less altered than most etc... Prince of Wales and three others at Drawing Room. Prince much overdressed. Princess Royal's apartments not open until after the King's Court over. At Lord Weymouth’s were all the foreign ministers of the southern department (those of the northern department were ‘cada uno por sa cuento’ on account of Lord Suffolk's illness). Lords Mansfield, Stormont, Aylesford, Mr. Mackenzie, Mr. Fullarton, Sir Stanier Porter & Mr. Chamier also mentioned. No private conversation but has in view what Grantham says about the summer. Showed Mansfield the account of Olavide’s sentence, he admired style. Queen at ball in evening. Came home early, tired of it. Sta. Maria, major domo, still in England. Little Sta. Maria at ball in foreigners box. Saw Dn. Julano Esquierdo, Officer of Spanish Guard, Knight of Malta with long thin Queue. Will leave name with them but unlikely to see them. Mr. Mouskin handsome, Almodobars fine. Saw Charles Hawkins. Mr. Kerr in a scarlet suit. Saw General Carpenter; general account of horses. Imagines King of Spain sorry for loss of Prince of Naples. Is Senor Elizabeth to end his days in Spain. Saw George Selwyn. Mrs. North in Town. Wants a Guia al Foraster for present year otherwise will forget the List of Spanish Generals. Hopes Magallors will procure the Don Quixote for him. Harry Pelham just gone. Shadwell seems better. Spanish Embassador pleased with Bath etc...
