- Scope and ContentWalked to Brighthelmstone with Mr. Brodrick and Harry to eat hot apple buffs made by a French pastrycook over for the custom of the Militia Gentlemen. Two Misses Hay arrived unexpectedly, thought sensible & ingenious etc... Violent winds caused damage in London [not detailed]. Blew down a few trees at Stanmer. Back to Town on Saturday. Still room for improvement in Grantham's health. Enquires about cost of Marbles. Advice about avoiding Cholick. Fortunate to have escaped the lameness which Fritz's illness ended with. Hasn't recurred since in England, but feet never recovered their former strength. Well otherwise. Suggests Grantham does not remain seated more than an hour at a time. Perhaps Fabre should draw up a state of Grantham's case for Dr. Warren. Lazaro had a lucky escape. Duque de Infantado returned. Enquires after Viso. Grantham returning to England; agreeable scheme unlikely to happen. Fritz's frustration. Much obliged to Bayer for the Sallusts. Will execute Storer’s commission, the present of one to the Bishop of Chester is highly acceptable. Saltram library not worthy of it; the worst collection of books Fritz knows. Thanks for drawing of Plateau. The Pavement might have been prettier. Olavide's sentence; ceremony and substance a disgrace to a nation and the age in which it was executed etc.. Irish affairs; will settle with Draper what's to be done. Hope to discharge Mr. Ashby. Draper not willing to sell out or buy in. Hope business with Mr. Meet is finished. Scheme afoot for Fritz to buy the great tithes of Norton. Will procure flesh brushes for Madame Arissa. Amused at commission, could not explain to Lady Pelham as fine Lady's in England are not supposed to have flesh or brushes. Sir T. Ackland aware of son's behaviour; threat to prosecute him for his fortune. He may be restored to favour. Prudence about Callington justified by the event viz. an opposition & petition. Wonders at not seeing Swinburne's book published. Grantham should get or make good drawing of Puerto de Alcala. Lady Pelham says she is promised one of Grantham's cards. Planning to take cases out of Custom's house, duty on books shouldn't be too bad, troublesome collecting from proprietors though. Horses; fears the Doctor's beast will not survive journey. Thinking of bespeaking a strong Post chaise, now made with very small side windows. Hasn't had sufficient information about Inkstand price. Fritz's wardrobe more valuable than he thought etc. Siere continues active & attentive etc. Shoots larks. Please use blotting paper instead of sand enough in last letter to ballast a ship. Thinks prints to Cook's voyage may be had separately. May have commissions enough to make up a case to send. M. Condon says Masin will return to Spain. Please ask latter to inform Fritz of size of panels for his coach. Frost thawing. Has had `external pain' for which he used frictions previously. Complaint prevents hearty laughing. Harry [Pelham] in country till March, hopes absence from London will benefit him. The Queen will not come out again until she has lain in. Birthday at usual time.
