  • Scope and Content
Update on letters received, one still missing. Pained by accounts of Grantham's illness. Nine hours of sitting writing letters could itself have caused the Gravel. Grantham's dinner at the Masserano's must have been awkward. Resignation of the Senor Estevans a great event at Grantham's Court. Thought that story of the Princess at the Escurial was not entirely due to health. Would have preferred that Salor[?] had Priego's Regiment than go into French service. Madame Bejar did not always think that a dead saint was better than a living sinner. Hopes to find Vicuna's in Town. Supposes the Marron is for him. Will bespeak Monmorin's watch of the best workman. Post delayed when coming via Draper to country, not when in London. Arrival of horses expected; lucky to get such a horse as Almagro. Transport of Waddilove's horse. Undecided how to spend winter, didn't expect to be without Grantham. Grantham dined with Gazola, Fritz asks whether he had been confined to his house since he left Spain. Intends to read Poyz's book etc... Assumes commission enclosed by Waddilove, in almost illegible Italian, is for Poyz. Discussion of the Gravel, Mr. Parker free from it this year, due to exercise, but has experienced severe attacks, passing blood etc. Return to England should cure Grantham's symptoms. Fritz's complaints may end up in gout. Means to enquire whether Uva Ursae used in England, wishes Grantham would use it. No news of Shadwell, thinks ultimately he would have been more a hindrance than help to Grantham. Approves of the employment of Fabre but enquires after Tabarie. Thankful Waddilove with Grantham. Hopes next accounts of Grantham's health are better. Lord Chatham says zeal may outlive hope. Fritz says where hope ends begins despair. Quieter since half dozen servants dismissed. Mr. & Mrs. and Miss Hamlyn visited, described them unfavourably, but no harm in them. They are related to the Thompsons. Friend Dick has had severe losses at play. Children well.
