- Scope and ContentDoes not like sound of Grantham's sore mouth and fever, recommends some medical discipline after hot weather. Has Grantham brought the Boellas into the Great Room? Knows of nowhere suitable for it at Newby or Whitehall, perhaps the saloon at Saltram. Where it might be a companion to a picture already there of some large women with game by Schneiders (Frans Snyders or Frans Snijders) [Rubens, see L30/14/333/134]. If Don Luis de Aguilar recovers, make him a recado in Fritz's name. Supposes if Portugal was in his own country be would make "porliches patillas of his Belle's shavings". Discussion of financial accounts, payments etc... Glad when Monro paid. Fritz thinks Grantham should have £6000 & [?] to command, Draper in disagreement. Does not remember Mr. Fitzgerald, agrees with Grantham's disposal of his minerals. Feels guilty having sent nothing to Brunier, please purchase anything suitable for value of three to four medals. Letter from Beylie asking Fritz to speak for him to Lord Rivers, not hopeful. Curiosity about Madame Smissaert satisfied at last. Would have been glad to have seen her, perhaps he never shall "but Rousseau & Voltaire are gone, without my ever having had that satisfaction". Will write to Draper to pay Byer's bill to Messrs Drummond etc.. Transport of vases & desert, decision to send them straight to London on a Spanish ship. Three Mr. Putts dined at Saltram; the eldest a man of large fortune in the county, his brother an attorney, youngest a student at Oxford. Eldest Putt reminiscent of Don [Dr?] Blas Tenerio. Mr. Coss Radcliffe visited. Visited Lord & Lady Macclesfield at the Citadel in Plymouth on a visit to the General, also Sir Frederick Rogers. Just returned from Mount Edgecumbe. Encloses copy of letter just received [see below]. Copy of letter from Thomas Shadwell, St. James' to Fritz, Saltram: ------------------------------------------------------------------- Response to L30/14/333/126, will not be going to Spain, prefers to follow the Robinson's advice, full explanation of reasons.
