  • Scope and Content
Last letter from Stanmer. Nanny impatient for Fritz's presence in Devonshire. Longs for news of Grantham's plans for St. Ildephonso, taking a house etc... Violent thunder storm on Monday, gutters blocked over Fritz's bedroom, bed and passage drenched. No bathing due to weather. Tom and Mr. Charles Wyndham dined yesterday, latter recruiting for Guards at Chichester. Had been at Brighthelmstone to see brother. Wyndham going on to Petworth, resembles Lord Egremont, has a good place under government. Late Lord provided well for all his sons, except the posthumous youngest. Mr. Spence dined on Monday. Met him at Tunbridge Wells, he is seen at all public places especially balls, his son is coming over to live with his wife; who is like Madame Zenowieff, they have four children. Lord & Lady Pelham and two eldest daughters drank tea with Mrs. Kempe at Lewes. They met the Robinson's old friend Mrs. Hanway a find woman for 60. Fritz pleased to avoid tea drinking visits. No dining until after races. Duke & Duchess of Richmond at Brightelmstone, half his Militia there, hasn't yet raised more than 400 out of 800. The King will most likely visit Coxheath Camp and Warley Common, not likely to go to the West. Took ride to race ground at Lewes and back, brief description. Describes Lord Pelham's new dressing room. Ground between new lodges, beautiful when planted up. The paling is slow, if completed according to the most extensive plan will cost £10,000. Hasn't heard from Draper since in town. Shadwell's brother not going to America. Hopes to hear from Mr. Wilkie and see him or anybody that has seen Grantham since Fritz left. Describes weighing machine and being weighed at Muntham; now weighs 11 stone. P.S. Would like to know what they both weighed at Hovingham "though I forgot whether you ever found the merryrandon [memorandom]as the little boy calls it".
