  • Scope and Content
Recent letters arrived. The Almodobars daily expected, London extremely thin. Odd that Escarano did not know that Me. [Madame] came on Fritz's last day in London, thinks she will succeed. Enamelled watch probably ready, will send with Escarano unless he decides to tour Italy. Doesn't remember Mr. Fitzgerald, Tom remembers Grantham's Tuscan. Mr. Dillon brought recommendation from Mr. Walpole. Fortunate, as an adventurer of that name imposed upon Mr. Wall and Mr. Seward. Assumes Zenowieff will pay for feast with winning of ‘Pharoah’. Gave Tom Mr. Nangles letter to be passed to Dr Du Val. Disposal of Vicuna's when they arrive, marron for Mr. Parker etc... Difficulties with horses. Doesn't know who wants to assist at Grantham's `view hoppings'. Grantham's instructions about case sent arrived to late for Fritz to follow them. Cannot say whether Map of America was amongst Negretti's books. Notes Grantham reading ‘Laluis’, hasn't heard of it. Wishes he wouldn't always read grave books. Extraordinary not to have heard from Rome about Desert. Ask Azarato. Happy about Grantham's approval on Fritz's conduct towards Shadwell. Doesn't think he will return. Saw his brother at Lewes. Improvements to Newby; thinks it should be done by degrees etc... Stanmer has cost near £7000; plans make the seat too large for the estate. Hopes they will not be executed. Discussion of Fritz & Grantham's plans, [not specified, ?different schemes for meeting again, Fritz returning to Spain etc...] Went to a play at Lewes with whole family; The Rivals by Mr. Sherridan, theatre an unfinished stable but dresses and scenes not bad etc. Eighty-three smugglers passed on way to sea and returned loaded same night. New lodges to be built on Brighthelmstone Road. Mr. Offley visited. Repeats contents of previous letter, regarding Bannisters, Mrs. North etc.... Lord Suffolk killed and recovered by newspapers. Lord Irwin has left everything to Lady Irwin for her life, £16000 per annum. After her death it goes to second son of Lord Beauchamp not yet born, in default of such issue to children of Lord Irwin's second daughter. Lady Holland will not recover. Lord Ossory encamped at Winchester. Duke of Portland stays in London, cannot afford to live at Welbeck. However, he's now free of gout by abstention from wine and meat. Lord Edward has spent £1500 a year and £60,000 in money. Keep Chico & Tordo until destinations known. Riding a black mare here. Sees few handsome saddle horses. Coach horses magnificent. Lord and Lady Ashburnham at Brighthelmstone will probably soon be Sussex neighbours. Lady A. better after long illness.
