- Scope and ContentHas received from the Spanish ambassador the annexed packet for the Countess d'Aranda, which he asked St Paul to forward to Grantham with his compliments and request that it will be delivered by a safe hand from Sitio to Madrid, to the countess herself, and that on no account should it be sent by the Parte, even under Grantham's cover. Fears he is a very irregular correspondent to Grantham, but hopes he will be excused due to the "continual scene of hurry and business" in which he lives. The accounts Grantham received from Lisbon of the dangerous situation of Lockhart were true, but things are now much worse and he is without hope. Mrs Lockhart wrote to Mrs St Paul last week that his total dissolution is hourly expected. Has today received Grantham's letter from St Ildephonso of 7 August. Promises to show every civility to Mr Johnson when he comes to Paris, and to execute Grantham's commission. Stedman was given Grantham's note, and will be told to journey at ease to Madrid. Sends compliments to Grantham, Mr Robinson and Waddilove. P.S. that the Rev. Mr Jeans, fellow of New College, son of Mr Jeans of Christ Church who is with St Paul, presents his respects to Grantham.
