  • Scope and Content
Translation: My Lord I received the letter with which Your Excellency honoured me on the 14th of this month, a while ago but I did not acknowledge receipt of it mainly because I wanted to see whether this matter in which I am interested, would be over. I believe now that it is and I am humbly grateful to you for as much that it was very unjust that Sieur Gochelat was further vexed in this matter. He will have been represented to the Comte de Bourneville in a way so as to [surprendre sa religion] and to make him believe that he had entered officiously or indiscreetly into this affair, without which the nobleman would not have added to the pardon the condition that in future he should be well-behaved and more restrained. The said Comte was absolutely wrong in this regard, M. Gochelat, according to all reports has absolutely nothing against him, being according to the good people of his acquaintance and his comrades, very circumspect and well disposed, and it was because of this reputation that allowed him into my home to help me sort out my papers as I have already had the honour of advising Your Excellency. When I have received news from Cadiz I will do myself the honour of informing Your Excellency, In the meantime , I have the honour to be very respectfully My Lord Your very humble and obliging servant Terras O'Neil.
