  • Scope and Content
Translation: My Lord, I believe that I must add this separately to inform you that the guardsman concerned, Sieur Gochelat is a decent man of good behaviour, who has no greater pleasure than that of helping his neighbour, he was introduced to me by an Irish gentleman who is greatly attached to me and if he had not known him for a genteel person he would have taken care not to have made him known to me. Up till now I can only praise him for his honest actions being already obliged to him, he has written all my letters, excepting this one, for the last two years, and has helped me to sort out my business papers and it would therefore be sad and humiliating for me to see him worried and pestered for something which does not concern him and into which he was drawn only to oblige me, unlike the one who has laid complaint against him. No-one was preventing him from enjoying his apartment so why did he abandon it, and if there is something worrying him why does he not talk to me about it and not the guardsman. I hope that Your Excellency will only have the goodness to anticipate what he would have done in relation to M le Conte de Bourneville and above all to obtain the assurance that he will give orders that this matter be concluded without further molestation of the guardsman, he has already been molested enough and that unjustly. My address is in the Callo de la Puebla, casa no 24, quarts municipal, Terras O'Neil. [On wrapper in English] [Having spoken to Bourneville he promised the Gard de Corps should not be molested].
