  • Scope and Content
Edward Nangle is introduced as an Irishman who lived several years in Spain as a Merchant, until his father's death when he came back to Ireland to take possession of the family estate in about 1775 or 1776. He was a widower and left a son and daughter in Spain under the care of friends. While in Ireland, he had thought it proper to conform to the Protestant religion and got married again. He died about 1771 and bequeathed to his son, James Francis Walter Nangle, £1500, if he comes over to Ireland and inherits the family estate. Should he not conform to this request, his daughter will automatically inherit the money. The estate is thought to contain 730 Irish acres and is now let at about £520. It has also encumbered a debt of £8000 and £100 a year is paid to the two widows of the late Mr Nangle. In three years time the leases expire and the estate will be worth £1800 a year. Several accounts have been sent to Nangle by his friends here, particularly Mr Dardis, but no answer has been received. It is apprehended that the information has been kept from him either through interest or other bigoted motives. By Irish law, if he does not come over and conform his duties before he is 18½years old, he will be forever excluded of his rights to the estate. His friends are naturally anxious to have his state of affairs laid before him and to receive his answer. It is therefore their humble request to his Excellency that he would give orders that an enquiry be made for him at Valdemore, where his family lived originally. The gentleman who was, and probably still is, his guardian, is named Heydon and he is said to be a Merchant based either at Valdemore or Madrid.
