  • Scope and Content
Translation: Excellent Lord My Lord, I have taken the liberty to reply to Your Excellency, after I received your worthy orders to draw and copy the picture of “The Parmo of Sicily” of Rafael and other pictures of Don Diego Velazquez with the some proportion and size of the copies that Your Excellency has there. Mr Pelham gave to me this order and showed me the “petipie” (measure?) that Your Excellency has alluded to in his letter, to adjust the measures of the reduced Spanish foot to the size in order to do the drawing and the copy asked for. I need the measure mentioned in the letter which I unfortunately forgot to take. I considered doing this the next time we met and therefore finish the task, so I require a favour of Your Excellency: to change this “petipie” that it has been used in the copies of Madrid in order that I can redo the copies that must be done here in order to obey Your Excellency. I have to advise you that the task has not been done, so I wrote to Florence, to Mr Pelham, but perhaps he did not received my letter because as yet I have not received an answer. By the letter from Florence I received the news that the pictures have arrived there by Liorna way, the print of Claudio Lorenes which Your Excellency had the grace to give me and I thank you again for this. I beg Your Excellency to give me more of his favours and the honour to obey all his valuable orders. May God protect Your Excellency through the many years that I wish for you. To the Excellent Lord, from your more Humble Servant Antonio Rafael Mengs Most Excellent Lord Baron of Grantham.
