  • Scope and Content
Long writes to Grantham to ask him to renew the application at the Court of Madrid on behalf of those who suffered when several ships were unjustly taken in the West Indies after the cessation of hostilities in 1748. The claim was allowed by the Court of Spain, and orders were sent to the Havana to restore the original value of the ships and cargoes. Only a part was paid, however, and the payment of the remainder delayed by the Spanish governors on various pretences. Although the Marquis Grimaldi assured the Duke of Bedford that the sufferers should have immediate redress, the Court of Madrid have now referred the decision to their Council of the Indies, even though the Spaniards have had the necessary proofs for many years. The claimants desired that the payment should be made in old Spain, since they could not obtain it in the West Indies, and as Spaniards in similar cases were paid in London.
