  • Scope and Content
Disbelieves the report current in Yorkshire that Grantham desired to be recalled and was coming home. Has been at Swinton since the beginning of July. Mr Aislabie is en garcon at Studley, as Madame remains in the south this year. The Allansons are with him. All the talk is about the Election of the Register in which the Dean of Ripon was beaten by a great majority although supported by Lord Rockingham and the Archbishop. Fred. Vane has given up Durham and Sir John Eden succeeds him. Northumberland is likely to be the scene of great distraction. Lockhart travels to Scotland for September and October - he must visit his constituents and see Grant. Is resolved to winter in London, in Parliament and Westminster Hall. Asks for his compliments to be given to the Comte de Rechtern, the Dutch Minister at Madrid, whom Lockhart believes is an old acquaintance of his at the Hague, and the brother to a Mlle. de Rechtern with whom the Duke of Marlborough was supposed to be in love.
