- Scope and ContentJames has travelled to Italy for his health, to change the scene and to see again the wonders of classical antiquity. His health is better, although he was forced by illness to leave Rome earlier than he had wished. Has witnessed an eruption of Vesuvius. French Ambassador, M. de Clermont has told James he saw Grantham often in Spain. James hopes Grantham will be in England on his return, probably in May or June. The French Ambassador and Lord Tilney "are the principal resources of us Strangers". Court is still at Caserta. Opera is very bad. At Potici there is nothing of consequence new, and James has not yet visited Pompeii. Has received only one letter from London since the meeting of Parliament, so can give no English or American news.
