    Writes from "Panton's house in Herts which is within two miles of a House I have taken", which he hopes Grantham will visit on his return. The Duke of Devonshire settled £300 a year on Charles Spencer and £100 for the Duchess' daughter by him. Leighem [?] has married Lady Betty. Lord Thomond is dead without a will, by which Lord Egremont gets nearly £10000 a year, yet Lady Bareymore refused him. The Prince is engrossed by Lady Erskine: some say he will marry her. Charles gets £10,000 by Lady Holland's death. The bonds from Carlisle, Crewe and Foley will be given up. Describes his visit to see the Otaleitian[?]. "I hear that by these late voyages the Navigation round the world will be much facilitated, and shorten'd, and that the existence of a great Southern continent has been clearly disprov'd". Sir Ralph Payne is coming over, and Lady Payne is in better health. Electioneering is beginning. G. Selwyn "is threaten'd with an Opponent at Gloucester". Bribery is expected. Ossory "continues firmly rooted" at Ampthill, Lady Ossory is expecting soon. Carlisle will soon go to Turin with the same character and appointments as Sir W. Lynch [?]. General Howard and Blaquiere were invested with the Blue Ribband yesterday. "London is at present compos'd of the Harrington family, a few Macaronies, and more Whores than we can find employment for; Crawford has open'd a house for us." Has heard bad account of Lord Holdernesse, Lord Ashburnham is backed to succeed him.
