  • Scope and Content
James has not written before as he fears his life and foxhunting interests will be dull to Grantham. "The only anecdote of any dignity" he can report is the breaking of Lord Robert's collarbone. James himself is well, although his recent trip to London left him less well, "so that my Constitution marks clearly the line of life I must follow." Fortunately he is without ambition, although he regrets the idea of "segregating" himself from Society. Little change in Grantham's friends Charles and Richard. Publicly, Charles is "more brilliant than ever", his talents displayed in the marriage bill. Crawford also spoke on that occasion, with some success. The Ladies' Club languishes. Gaming prospers: Carlisle has won about £25,000, Tynne about half. Scot appears as a Dove this year. Charles Fox is an expert horse backer and jockey. James regrets that his country life prevented him meeting Mr Harris - his candidateship at Almacks is out of the question at present because of his nomination to Berlin. James would visit, but finds the journey too long. Hopes that Grantham's appetite is improved.
