  • Scope and Content
Carlisle must remain at Castle Howard for some time, and therefore can send only second hand news through G Selwyn. When Carlisle was in Town recently, he found Almacks much improved. Plays have been acted at many houses, and Carlisle recounts an amusing incident when Harry St John's scimitar got between his legs. Has heard that Hipsley Cox has been obliged to go abroad for his affairs, while young Fitzgerald, Lady Mary's son must stay at home for the same reason. These bankruptcies are reported as being "as alarming to us Macaronies as that of the Cliffords at Amsterdam is to our Merchants in the City". Richard and Charles are "both very low". Ossory's sister is very much improved and the little Duke of Bedford plays with her all day at chess. Lady Pembroke is with child and stays with her husband in the country until March. Ste Fox has sent an ambassador to Lord Holland to treat with him about £30,000 which "he finds would be convenient to him", offering either to accept it as a present or to give his father 5%. He is now at Winterslow until the negotiation is over. Fears the Scotch Bank is a very troublesome affair to the Duke of Buccleugh/Buccleuch.
