  • Scope and Content
Carlisle gives apologies for not replying to Grantham's letter and giving news of Lady Carlisle and the birth of their daughter. Carlisle has just come from Newmarket, although he is no longer a jockey and has sold his horses. Charles and Richard have been at the last two meetings and have bet large sums of money, Charles with more success. Lord Farham [?] is to be married to an Irish Lady. Ste Fox "and the whole party" have come to Castle Howard, acrimoniously. Harry and Mrs St John were also at Newmarket. Rumours abound that the Duke of Dorset has married Mrs Parsons. As soon as possible Carlisle will send the Depositions of the Grosvenor cause - it seems that Lord Grosvenor had told some of his family he was to be made Minister of State. Has been at Fitz at Millone [?] - a vile place where everybody was ill. "Prickcautions" - hopes he has taken enough for himself and Brother. Asks whether Grantham has been to a Spanish Bull feast, and reminds him to send some good Spanish wine. Townsend has refused to pay the land tax, so the Middlesex elections will be held again. Carlisle disapproves of the marriage (if true) of the Duke of Cumberland to Mrs Haugton/Horton, Luttrell's sister. Some reports say that Gloucester is dying, others that he is recovered. The Marlboroughs have made a uniform which is "not only to be worn at Blenheim but in London whenever his Gentlemen appear in his Grace's presence." Miss Floyd's cancer is almost cured by applying toads. PS that since beginning the letter, the part about the Duke of Dorset has been found to be without foundations. (Sic).
