Ron Sharman (1919-2007) worked at W.H. Allen during the Second World War as a turner and fitter. Between 1959 and 1983 he served as a Conservative councillor for Queens Park. He was Mayor of Bedford in 1967-68 and from 1978 was chairman of the River Festival Committee.
