  • Scope and Content
Spoke to Grimaldi re "flower" [fleur] "which business is left entirely to the Director of them at the Groyne, and is managed there chiefly by Don Gerionimo de Hoxosa of the same place, which I infer from his having stop'd a cargo of 3030 barrels shipped by a friend of ours at Pho. and originally intended for him, but was ordered elsewhere by reason of the Bills which he ordered to be drawn on London for Reimbursement having been refused Acceptance. This may give Room to some disagreeable Discussion. The Proceedings having been violent and unjustifiable, and hereafter it may be necessary to trouble you and Lord Grantham upon it." Hopes Mr. Hizosa may be persuaded to make Reparation. Stressed to him seriousness of having an English ship stopped, rudder unhung. Capt. led to give up cargo. More materially important matter: "Royal Assients Negroe Co." established under protection of his most Catholic Majesty. Assuming them to be of undoubted security, engaged to supply them 8,000 barrels "Flower" p.a. on very low terms, gave letter introduction to trade in Barbados, saying they were credit-worthy. Co. now failed to pay outstanding bill, presumably will refuse others due, amounting to 23,000 Ps. of Eight. Director of Co. (Dr. Franco Aguirre) filed insolvency; partner (Don Jos. Maria Enrile) protests. Co. not failed, but some partners not paid agreed Capital, totalling 5 to 600,000 Ps. His son, Don Geronimo Enrile gone to Madrid to put case to King, and hopes Grantham will lend support by taking matter to Minister of Indies. Also duty newly imposed on "flower" and order for "sherry wine" sent to London.
