- Scope and ContentWhile in London intended each day to write but has returned to Ampthill without doing so; knows Mrs Parker and other friends have been writing. In London 10 weeks; "not much to do in parliament after the marriage bill, which I shall take for granted you heard enough of, it is still kept sitting in order to determine upon Bradshaw's petition, which as you may imagine makes the country gentlemen grumble a good deal, and I think with reason, all the premiers friends, I observe, say it is absurd, and there seems to be some dessous des cartes in this affair, Scot says, they want to pigeon Lord North, but who he means by they, I don't know. We had great Newmarkets this spring, I suppose you know Charles Fox and Foley make the greatest figure, have more matches and a longer string than any body. Lord Rockingham recovering from almost fatal illness. Three masquerades, "the Pantheon one was a most beautiful sight but rather triste, the Duchess of Bedford is as lively as a miss of sixteen, and says she only goes about for the sake of her girls, Louisa by the by is vastly improved and much the fashion. The opera has had great success by the assistance of Mademoiselle Keinel [?], who is really much beyond any dancer I ever saw or can conceive". The Fish lately very bad and talks of going abroad; speaking in parliament was for a while of service to his bad spirits. "Lord Carlisle has lately printed, but not published, an ode of his writing, on the death of Gray which I hope he has sent you, you will be astonish when you see it, for it is nearly as good as any of Grays own - Chambers has just published a treatise on oriental gardening, merely for the opportunity of abusing Browne, by which in my opinion he has exposed himself extremely". George Selwyn has doubtless sent you news. Ste and Lady Mary are very well; so is Lady Ossory. Looks forward to account of Lord Grantham's tours. Dr Andrews the Provost is studying Spanish very hard in London for tour into Spain.
