  • Scope and Content
Have received King's command to inform Landgrave of Hesse Cassel, the Duke of Brunswick, the Hereditary Prince of Hesse Cassell, the Prince of Waldeck, the Prince of Anhalt Zehbzt that it would be necessary that sufficient numbers of recruits to complete their respective corps of troops in King's service should be ready for embarkation next February for North America. You are to set out for Germany "with all convenient Expedition", discover exact number of recruits and inform me of number of tons of transport needed at embarkation points. Admiralty prepared for 1500. Have written to Baron Gemmingen to acquaint him for the information of the Margrave of Anspach that no recruits wanted for the Anspach Troops. You may ask an audience of Landgrave of Hesse Cassel - should he wish to redemand his troops, dissuade him; prevail on him to consider "the general friendly intentions of the Treaty with His Majesty" notwithstanding stipulations in 9th article to allow His Majesty to employ the Hesssian Troops in any other service than that in which they are engaged in North America. Will receive support from General Schlieffer. Landgrave's troops will only be employed with King's own troops. Deliver letter from King to Landgrave only if latter proves co-operative. If you have opportunity of engaging additional troops at any Court , do so.
