  • Scope and Content
Hopes for Lord Grantham's protection for self and Lady Mary Duncan on journey to Valentia; now at Paris, with passports to Perpignan from English minister. Lady Mary was formerly acquainted with Madame Fuentes at London and has obtained from her husband who is ambassador here from Court at Madrid for "Milady Marie Duncan and al Cavallero Duncan su Maseido que pasar a Valencia de Espanna por Catalunna con sus Criados y Equipages"[sic]; told this is sufficient but doubtful since suffering at Calais. Lord Bristol and Lady Rochford told Lady Mary that journey through Spain impracticable without "Beds, a Batterie de Cuisine and some other little Conveniency's". and "that a Lady of fashion traveling on account of her health, could find no stop in carrying these things with her, from the officers of the Customs either in Spain or France" - in fact beds etc seized and their recovery by assistance of minister here delayed journey one month. Set out from Paris tomorrow; any directions may await collection from the Posthouse in Perpignan.
