  • Scope and Content
Paid £63.3..4 sterling drawn by Messrs Patrick Joyes and sons on me in favour of John Mayne esquire and son; paid to Mayne drawn on Hoare. Mr Cooper and Mr Eglin satisfied by plan of exchange mentioned in last letter but the Dean has some "travers dans la tête" about some debts of the late incumbent and some doubts about part of the tithe - told him the presentation made no alteration to them. Could not perceive that and "where the perception is weak, the obstinacy is strong" but Dean is a good, worthy man. Have sent a resignation to Waddilove of Whitby to be signed in Spain; must be some way of so doing as remembers signing in France own estate documents. If exchange goes ahead, need not return "till I let him know". "The Act about base Gold is vey oppressive and extensive in the confusion it has created in this country. Labour is stopt both at Sheffield and in the Clothing towns. I came from Bishopthorpe on Tuesday; half the provisions on the Saturday before went out of York unsold: the difficulty with regard to circulation of coin is so great". Goes to Scotland for 6 weeks on Wednesday but letters to "Dartmouth Street, Westminster will always find me". Compliments from Lord Kinnoull to Lord Grantham and brother; mine to Waddilove.
