- Scope and ContentApologies for 3 unanswered letters, that of 25 March (received 12 April) "found me in a situation very unfit for writing letters" which only recently gave "power to think at all". Gave Dean of York the letter for him and Mr Montagu - plan to fix Waddilove at Topcliffe. "Cooper the Residentiary, father of the deceased incumbent, is the Patron" and wants to install son-in-law Eglin who has another living but no degree; requested degree at Lambeth - declined; petitioned Duke of Grafton for Mandamus degree at Cambridge - declined. Suggests Waddilove resign Whitby and have Topcliffe, Eglin to have Whitby which is only a curacy and therefore tenable without a dispensation with his other living. Eglin is in London, his wife at York. "I go to Bishopthorpe on Tuesday and I shall have an opportunity to know more of this affair". Thanks for the wines - 3 butts of Malaga Mountain; details of bills of lading. Mrs Aislabie at Buxton a most valuable friend. Draft referred to in letters of 31 May (received 21 June) and 10 June (received 30th). As yet know nothing of Pacharetti from Cadiz. Lord Kinnoull met me here from Scotland; I will journey to Scotland 21st for 6 weeks, returning "to meet my little Westminsters here at Bartholomewtide. Robin is at Oxford and Peter the Officer is here but they will both be with me most of the year. Miss Auriel (?)comes down with the Westminsters and stays as usual; and Lady Harriett Roper stays all the year here". (Short verse). Scotch friend and neighbour of Sir James Grant gives good account of him and family. "Sir Ludovick threw away so much money, that our friend Jemmy is left in very limited circumstances". "I attended Parliament very little this year and there were very few days of business in our house". Portsmouth journey "cleverly conducted and passed agreeably to every body". Lord Kinnoull sends compliments to Lord Grantham and brother "to whom I beg mine" and also to Waddilove. Old Shuttleworth is dead.
