- Scope and ContentThanks for letter last month. Satisfying for Lord Grantham that brother and Waddilove in their different departments are nearby; must be reserve though politeness in Spanish nobility. P Masserano met with great regard here and deserved it but imagine few have that affability. Glad climate agreeable - always thought it was very healthy with proper precautions against the heat. Hot summer here, some days as hot as Spain. In Yorkshire prospect of good harvest better than in the south but England is in general very fruitful this year. Know nothing more politically than is in the newspapers. Family news: Lord Kinnoull (?) extremely well and has Bishop of Salisbury and Lady Mary with him. Mr Drummond better and is at Harrowgate with little George to take the waters, as is Miss Auriel(?). Expects the two Oxonians and Ned; Jack in Jamaica; hopes Peter will return with General Mostyn from Minorca; his Lieutenant in the 6th Regiment has 6 months furlough "he had like to have played the fool and married at Minorca but that has been prevented". May stop at Gibraltar or elsewhere if not coming with Mostyn in which case commends him to Lord Grantham's protection. Has lost brother Dr Roper who was Chancellor of this Diocese - left sister Harriet everything for life. Poor Beverley died last night - a happy release for both considering their helpless state. Would be glad to accommodate affairs between Lady Robinson and Dr Hurdis but rarely see latter as he never comes to York and could cause jealousy by interfering with Prebendal estates. Go to Harrowgate tomorrow en route for Studley for a few days - Mrs A[islabie] far from well but Mr A[islabie] "has taken a new lease". Compliments to your brother, Waddilove and Mr Wall if he remembers me.
