- Scope and ContentSo many persons write to you cannot think I can add anything interesting. Charles resigned 4 or 5 days ago - real reasons are very complicated; not because Lord North gave Mr Maclean a place Charles had a promise of for Olivier, nor because he disapproves on the Royal Marriage Bill despite intention to oppose it even before resolving on resignation; it was because of " a general neglect of Lord North towards him this winter, which his spirit is too high to submit to". Resents supposition that the desperate state of his fortune meant he was considered dependent on the court. If he does not go into determined opposition he will probably get better place next summer. "Ossory is still in the Country, and does not talk of coming to town till the Spring". James, Meynell and all that party are in the Country; Duke of Roxburgh still in Scotland, his brother very ill so he will not come to town this winter. Lord and Lady Spencer in the country; "my spirits and health are so bad that I cannot bear to dine every day at Almacke and go to Assemblys in the Evening". I miss Sir Ralph and Lady Payne "as I was not in love with Lady Payne she never pretended to treat me ill". Am writing from Almack's which is quite full; "would be endless to tell you the evens that have happened in the gaming world"; at present Charles and Richard without a halfpenny - sometimes have had £20,000 or more in their bank. Cedrington(?) has lost above £20,000 this winter.
