- Scope and ContentRecommends to Lord Grantham's protection Captain Dalrymple of Queen's Regiment who has 2 months leave to tour Spain and proposes visiting Madrid. Young friend Baird now on way to Paris with Lord Grantham's chaplain; happy to find "he behaved so as to deserve your favour and the notice of many persons of distinction. He is now a Lieutenant of Grenadiers in my Regiment and my Aid de Camp, and I hope to see him here in September". On last dispute about Falkland Islands, "large sum of money was voted by Parliament for additional fortifications to this place, on the Supposition of its being attacked by Sea and land, by the united forces of France and Spain". Parts of that plan carried on for last 3 years, at present employed on a capital work "which I have named The King's Bastion, and which will be a great strengthening of our Sea line". Death of "Most Christian Majesty" may alter European politics, so is "pushing on that work with all possible dispatch" to have it ready for defence and also offence "before the peaceable system be broke through". Requests earliest information of possible hostile intention.
