  • Scope and Content
to: Right Honourable William Lord Cowper, Baron of Wingham, Lord High Chancellor from: H. Pembroke complaint by Daniel Warner of Hitchin, Hertfordshire, grocer one of the sons of Sarah Warner of the same widow deceased, that Sarah was possessed of considerable personal estate of money, plate, jewels, bonds, bills, notes & other "specialties" to the value of £200 & upwards & that she died intestate January 1707 & Daniel hoped her personal estate would be divided equally among her children. However, immediately after her death Isaac Underwood, chandler of Hitchin & wife Sarah & Joseph Foster maltster of Hitchin & wife Anne (Sarah & Anne being daughters of said Sarah Warner) combined to defraud Daniel & the other children & possessed themselves of the whole estate & refused when requested to give any to Daniel or any other children of said Mary [sic] Warner, saying her estate was insufficient to discharge her debts & funeral expenses, whereas they knew well her estate was worth at least £200 & there was money due to the deceased. Also that the Underwoods & Fosters had burnt all the bonds etc after the death of the mother & Daniel asks for a writ to be served upon them. Note at end: "Mr. Underwood, I have here sent you a copy of the bill in Chancery which your brother Warner hath exhibited against you and your brother Foster. I hope to be in the country in a short time and then we may consult together what is proper to be done in this affair. I am Your humble servant George Draper, Inner Temple. 23 July 1715. Sent to Mr. Isaac Underwood at his house in Tyler Street in Hitchin (by Stevenage Bagg.) 23 July 1715
