Taxes. Meeting on new turnpike road: Alston not there, so nothing done, so did not say a word of sums ladyship pleased to mention until other persons more interested had declared themselves. I am yet of opinion they will not find money. Set down Henry Lowings unfortunate child for the 6d charity and also informed Mrs Harrison that the apothecary may attend Mary Edwards a month longer. Has had 5 barrels of herrings down for poor, which are very acceptable to them at ¼d each; hopes ladyship will let me continue to the loss of £14 or £15 to ladyship. as they are almost the only meat (if I may call them) that poor can get in these very dear times; and they will now use near 2 barrels in a week if they can have them; up to now have had only 1 barrel a week.
