  • Scope and Content
Bundle of letters, receipts etc respecting the legacy payable to Mrs Sarah Jones (The annuity was paid by means of banknotes, apparently sent separately in two halves. She mentions that she is afraid that her son will find her and so is constantly changing her address.) Bath, 9 July 1828 Letters to be sent to Mr Anderson's, 38 Claremont Sqare, Pentonville, London Worcester, 14 January 1829 Last account of son was that he was in London in July Worcester, 22 July 1829 Acknowledges receipt of second halves of banknotes. Would be glad to know in future what day to expect the money Worcester, 3 March 1830 Was surprised to find that he[she?] had been writing to the P.O. enquiring after her. She lives too far from Worcester to have her letters delivered and only calles at P.O. when se expects any. Doesn't think it necessary that her local clergyman should witness the signing of receipts, especially as correspondent knows her handwriting. Is not desirous of having her affairs made the talk of the parish, and would prefer to come to Town to receive money in person. Hopes to received the remaining half notes, and reply, at end of next week. Noted dated 22 April 1832 recording the death of Sarah Jones on that day. Account communicated to Mr G White, from Mr Illingworth, Deputy Keeper of the Records in the Tower, Furnival's Inn, Holborn. Mr White send account of death to his father, Mr G White, solicitor, Grantham. Signed by F Towne. Letter from W Illingworth, 2 Gray's Inn Square, 15 June 1832, to "Sir". Has no deeds of Mr Towne except some drafts concerning Mrs Norris's settlement and of annuity deeds of Mrs Jones. Mrs Jones died on 22 April, without a will. Her son is somewhere in Flanders or Germany an never likely (through some swindling transaction) to return to England. So no administration can be taken out. "I have more to say on this subject." Also: copy of entry in burial register of Camden Town, belonging to the parish of St Martin's in the Fields, of Mrs Sarah Jones, Lion Place, Edgware Road, Buried on 22 April 1832, aged 56.
