Abstract of Title of John Saunderson to freehold lands and premises in Thurleigh
(I) Conveyance by lease and release of 16-17 February 1816
Parties:
(i) Lawrence Castleman of Ravensden, yeoman;
(ii) John Markham late of Bedford, now of Colmworth, yeoman;
(iii) Elizabeth Ward of Kempston, widow (sole surviving executrix of John Ward late of Kempston, deceased);
(iv) Thomas Jefferies of Thurleigh, yeoman;
(v) Benjamin Jefferies of Thurleigh, yeoman
Reciting:
- mortgage by demise of 11 April 1807 from (1) John Carter of Thurleigh, yeoman and William Williamson of Thurleigh, yeoman (trustee for John Carter) to (2) John Markham for £400 of (a) cottage in Holt End, Thurleigh in occupation of Sarah Cole, widow, then John Houghton, then Samuel Marshall, then John Carter; (b) two closes of pasture adjoining (a) ino Sarah Cole, then John Houghton, then Mark Smith, then John Carter containing eight acres with land formerly of John Harvey in occupation of John Williamson S, the highway E and land of Sir Jeremy Sambrook W and N; (c) two messuages since erected on part of (b) in occupation of John Marshall and Judith Marshall - (a)-(c) formerly purchased by John Ward from Henry Smith;
- default was made in repayment;
- mortgage of 18 April 1817 of (a)-(c) above by (1) John Carter and William Williamson to (2) John Ward for £250;
- default was made in repayment;
- death of John Ward after publishing his will on 17 February 1810 bequeathing all personal estate to his wife Elizabeth for her life and appointing her and his daughter Mary Burr joint executrixes;
- Mary Burr was now dead and proof of the will of John Ward in Bedford Archdeaconry on 5 May 1810;
- lease and release of 29-30 January 1813 from (1) John Carter to (2) Lawrence Castleman and (3) William Emery, yeoman of (a)-(c) above subject to mortgage;
- mortgage monies then outstanding were £432/19/8 to John Markham and £276/18/9 to Elizabeth Ward;
- Lawrence Castleman sold (a)-(c) by auction on 3 March 1815 at the Trefoil, Thurleigh as Lot 2 which sold for £560

(V) Declaration of 23 October 1851 by Thomas Jefferies, Robert Jefferies and Benjamin Jefferies that they believed their father Thomas Jefferies was married to their mother Elizabeth Flanders of Eaton Socon in 1795 and that they were the only children, Thomas being the eldest and that their father died on 24 May 1839
(VI) Declaration of 27 October 1851 by Mary Favell, widow, that she was 77 and that Thomas Jefferies was her brother, that she remembered him marrying Elizabeth Flanders of Eaton Socon and that there were three children, Thomas, Robert and Benjamin, Thomas being the eldest
(VII) Reconveyance of 6 October 1855 from Samuel Bailey to Thomas Jefferies, with Thomas Wesley Turnley of Bedford, gentleman as trustee on redemption of the mortgage at (IV)

- Thomas Jefferies late of Thurleigh, farmer, deceased, was seized of (a)-(c) and died intestate on 24 May 1839

(b) two closes of pasture adjoining (a) formerly in the occupation of William Castleman then Thomas Jefferies senior, then Thomas Jefferies junior and now Benjamin Jefferies and containing 6 acres, 3 roods, 35 poles
(c) two messuages sometime since built on (b) by Thomas Jefferies senior in the occupation of William Randall and William Mayes on of near the site of two messuaqes then pulled down which had been formerly in the occupation of John Marshall and Judith Marshall bounded: N and W by land formerly of John Harvey, then John Sambrook Crawley; S by land formerly of John Harvey then John Crawley now John Sambrook Crawley and E by highway
(IX) Mortgage of 29 September 1859 for £400 at 5% interest from John Saunderson to W Dynes, yeoman secured on (a)-(c) in (VIII)
(X) Mortgage of 24 June 1869 from John Saunderson to Elizabeth Dynes of Wilshamstead, widow, for £410 at 5% interest secured on (a)-(c) in (VIII)
