State of roads from Cheltenham. Never saw a place so busy, "all the old women and even children dressing wool and spinning in huts, all singing, which with the heavy sound of their wheels makes a most unharmonious music; but I was greatly surprised to find them all running out and begging as I walked by their doors, by which I found it to be a very poor place." Refers to "berceau walk like those at Wrest now cut down."
