- Scope and ContentRefers to the urban council of Petersfield which has 'not one of the gentry upon it and is run by, for, and entirely for the profit of the trades men.' Have been servantless for months, causing domestic choas. Refers to his children. Marcia is perfecting her French with a family near St. Malo. Gregory is at Portsmouth undergoing the sub lieutenant course in gunnery etc. Richard is at home 'He is unfortunately not a normal boy.' Laments that his children have little respect for his opinions. Is generally unhappy in this 'second rate locality' and has no congenial men friends in the town. Is also in great financial distress due being duped into bad investements, and the two men who might have helped him out have died prematurely. 'I dare not tell my wife'. The business is in the hands of two seperate solicitors, but they have little hope of recovering anything. Has been ill for 13 months, unfit for business 'especially business of this intensely worrying character';. Can no longer do his exam work, which loses him £85. Refers to things he is working on that may be published. Mentions the death of Geoffrey Sebry [?] in Kenya, and his wife's indictment on a criminal charge of having a native servant beaten to death. News of other mutual friends, particularly the Hodgkinson family.
