Letter from William George Tompkins to his wife as follows: Dear Rose We had Church Parade this morning and I saw all our chums some who with me at Ampthill & have been sent out here you see the Batt have just come out for a rest & we happen to be lucky to be with them for a bit are going to move again to some other billet further back soon so don’t worry yet about me. Keep on praying for the best of luck for the Bedford Boys won’t you. The food we get you cannot grumble at a bit better than where we just come from it is very interesting country all along the road you see crucifixes & shrines of the Catholic belief & the cathedral in one place we came through was one I have never seen the like so lofty and magnificent but some of the houses & shops & streets well Hoxton with a brush up would look like the West End in comparison to them here. I cannot tell you much more news as you know but I hope you are well & all at home. Love to M & C. Kind remembrances to Mrs B & Maggie, Mr Voules & Mr and Mrs Clarke also Mr Parish & all kind friends & all. Dear Rose God Bless you I do hope you won’t worry keep smiling on & trusting in one above to soon bring brighter & better times back again. I pray God very soon but Duty now & God give us every good Luck in all our work out here to bring us Victory that will soon mean our safe return back to our homes & dear ones very soon. Now God Bless you answer all your prayers & close with best love & heaps of kisses from your loving husband Love to Boy & Knibbs
