Letter from William George Tompkins at Landguard Camp, Felixstowe on YMCA headed notepaper as follows: “My dear Wife Just a line to you old dear again. Read your letter dinner time it warmed me up as its some cold here my word it’s a wonder we stick it its too cold to drill us out of doors even in Hats. The seaside sounds nice but oh dear when its cold its cold. Well I am keeping fit & well considering all things have to put up with been before the Doctor today stripped again asked again all particulars as to next of kin address caused a smile at Laura Rose never heard of a Laura before wish I could always hear and see her God Bless her. The Draft seems to get no earthly chance of leave at all though some fellows in the company get passes as you see the Army works things right (I don’t think). It’s a blooming great shame how things are worked. We have appealed to Sergts & Sergt Major again with no success so now we are sending in a petition in writing to see how that will work so don’t despair or worry and if we go to the Base we shall not do much for weeks as the Bedfords are in the firing line now & are expected back to billets for rest in a short time so we may Click. Dear Rose Cheer up what ever you do. Perhaps all will very soon be over & things as usual and then we can both go with the tickets for Bread and Soup & beer as well. Give my love to Dear Old Mum & Charley tell them I shall always think about them also remember me to Mr Blows & Maggie tell her to hustle up with them shells as I shall want plenty when I go out with the Bedfords. Remember me to Mrs Voules and Emma. Mrs Clark & ALL. Many thanks for PIE that is coming my mouth waters already. Above all dear don’t worry will you now I shall be all right. God will look after you & me too so keep on Trusting and Praying. Don’t give up Hope I will try to write & let you know any more news on Sunday & I hope it will be good news. So now good night God Bless you always. Stroke old Knibbs for me & pat Boy as well. Keep the Home Fires Burning oh carry on Wife & Sweetheart & Nurse too many heart’s full Love. Tone of Kisses. Please don’t write till you hear from me again.
