- Scope and ContentJoseph Fletcher: he was the servant to Thomas Smith of Great Bramingham. His master lost a pig. In consequence of something he heard his master sent him to look for the pig. He went to Stopsley to William Harris and asked if he had a fat pig to sell. Harris said no. Harris said he knew of one and planned to kill it the next week and said it belonged to his wife’s father, Lines. He went to Luton to enquire where Lines lived and was told he lived with his daughter at the Two Brewers in Luton. he went out into the yard and asked the woman whether she had a pig. He asked to look at it. It was in the pig sty and she fetched the key and unlocked the door. He examined the pig and found it to be his master’s property. He could swear to it and he asked he how long she had the pig. She said she did not know but she though about a fortnight. He told her he could swear to the pig and took the pig away. Thomas Smith: he lost a pig as stated by the last witness. He had seen a pig and swore it to be his. Timothy Lines: he had possession of a pig for a week and bought it from his son William Lines. He paid him £4 for it. His son was a pig jobber. Nobody saw him buy it. William Lines: he bought the pig from a stranger. He had him £3 15s for it. The man was driving it and it had a string round its leg. He bought it on Wednesday afternoon. Elizabeth Odell: she lived at Sundon and on Thursday was going between Sundon and Dunstable and saw William Lines and another man. They were standing still and had a pig. She heard William Lines tell the other man he would give £3 15s and heard him ask the man to take it to his house. She did not know the man but he had on a brown round frock. It was early in the morning.
