  • Scope and Content
Mary Kingston: Wife of John Kingston, victualler of Millbrook. The prisoner along with another person came into her husband’s public house about 6pm. The prisoner called for a pint of beer and he then came to her in the bar and asked her to cut him a shillings worth of victuals which she did. The prisoner and his friend then went into the back room to eat it and stopped there till they left, but on going to the door they met a friend. The prisoner came back and came up to the bar again and asked her for a shillings worth of gin and water. She told the prisoner that he had better have sixpence worth first. She went off to make the drink and found that she did not have sufficient gin so she turned to the cupboard to get some more. When she returned she found the jug missing and charged the prisoner with having stolen it. The prisoner denied it. She perceived that the prisoner had the jug concealed under his arm and upon searching his person she found the jug and took it back. She called for assistance and the prisoner was taken into custody.
