- Scope and ContentGeorge Drake: on 26 August he went into the Hare & Hounds public house at Warden and had a pint of beer, a roll and cheese. The prisoner and another man by the name of Thomas Yarrow were in the house at the time. He left the house just after 10pm with the intention of going to Biggleswade. When he had got a short distance from the house he met the same 2 men and walked along with them. He asked them to show him the road to Biggleswade and when they had gone about a mile along the road they turned down a lane and said it was the way to Biggleswade. 200 or 300 yards down the lane one of the men stopped before him and the other snatched his bag from his shoulders and ran away with it. The bag contained plane, 2 chisels, 4 pound weight of nails, a coat, a waistcoat, a pair of trousers and a shirt. Thomas Yarrow said if he would give him sixpence he would call the prisoner back. He told him he had no money to give them. Yarrow then ran after the other man and saw no more of them. He returned to Warden and slept under a cart lodge until the morning when he made some persons acquainted with what had happened. Neither of the men used any threats or threatened to ill use him. [cross examination] they men did offer to carry the bundle for him and they each did carry it a short distance. They gave it to him directly they turned into the lane. Statement of the accused: he gave them the bundle to carry. James Whitridge: he managed the business of the Hare & hounds at Warden for Mrs Pitford the landlady. George Drake was in the house at the same time as Henry Beeby and Thomas Yarrow. Drake said he must go to Biggleswade and Yarrow said to him "go along with me old fellow. I’ll show you the way to Biggleswade". Beeby and Yarrow left the house about 10pm and Drake about 10 minutes after.
