  • Scope and Content
This file consists of a collection of papers which have not [all] been numbered, as they are rather disjointed. They have however been extracted, & a typed extract handed to Mr. Whitbread. The papers are written by Mrs. Harriot Gordon, daughter of SW I by his 1st wife, Harriet Hayton. Mrs. Gordon inherited Stocks, a property near Berkhamstead (in the market 1930). She left it to Sir Edward Grey, K.G., now (1930) Lord Grey of Falloden. The papers consist of notes on the descent of the Duncombe family, formerly owners of Stocks, and the Hayton family, to whom it descended by marriage. Joseph Highman, (see D.N.B.) & John Hughes, (see D.N.B.) are mentioned as relations by marriage; and also Nehemiah Arnold, the juryman at the trial of the seven bishops, of which Lord Macaulay gives a spirited account in his history. The file also contains papers dealing with Mrs Gordon's father, Samuel Whitbread I, which have been catalogued at W1/924/1-8.
