    Ekins Simpson: on the night of 18 June his stable, which was 300 yards from his dwelling house in Riseley, was entered and articles stolen. In consequence of information given to him, he searched the lodging William Elsom and found there a ring halter, a lather headed halter, a chain rein, a hip strap and crupper, a pair of plough lines, backing gears, a hedging bill and a cart saddle. The articles were found in a trunk belonging to William Elsom. The search was partly conducted in the presence of Elsom who said he did not know how the articles came to be there. The articles were delivered in the custody of Jacob Ayres. Richard Carrington: he was a horse keeper to Ekins Simpson. He remembered the day of the robbery. He had used several of the articles in the course of the day. He left the stable about 6pm and they were safe then. The stable door was shut but not locked. The next morning about 4am he found the articles missing. He informed his master the articles were missing. He identified the articles produced by Jacob Ayres. Jacob Ayres [continued]: he went to the lodging of William Elsom on 6 September. William Elsom lodged at the house of Jonathan Elsom. William Elsom was present for part of the search. When the articles were taken from the trunk William Elsom said that part were his and part his brothers. Statement of the accused: he was sorry he had taken the items and his brother knew nothing about it.
