  • Admin/biog history
Originally Wesleyan. First chapel built 1807 and replaced 1841. The Sunday School was established in 1826. New chapel built 1967. Circuits: Bedford Wesleyan to c.1829; Bedford and Ampthill 1829-1875; Bedford St Mary 1875-1942; Bedford South 1942-1971; Bedford South & Ampthill 1971-2011; North Bedfordshire from 2011. The Methodist Church in Wilstead closed in March 2020 and never reopened. Serious issues with water ingress via the flat roof on the Church Hall, and the costs of remedying that, prompted the small and elderly Church Council (as Local Managing Trustees) to seek permission to cease worship. The North Bedfordshire Circuit Meeting agreed the request to cease worship on 14 September 2021 and agreed that Trustee responsibility for the Church premises and resources should pass from Wilstead Church Council to the Circuit Meeting. The District Policy Committee, at its meeting on 10 November 2021, applying powers devolved to it by the District Synod, gave its approval to the closure of Wilstead church and to its sale.
