Pilot’s Flying Log Book of James Bernard Allen, Lieutenant, Royal Flying Corps. Gives date and hour of flight, initials of pilot, machine type and number, passenger, time, height, course, remarks. Covers 24 May1917 – 5 Jun 1918. With copy of reference written 9 May 1920 by Captain C E Bryant 12th Royal Lancers, Ponsonby Barracks, Curragh, County Kildare: Lieut. J B Allen was in no.23 Squadron from Sept 1917 to May 1918, and during that time he did an extraordinary lot of good work. He was laid up for a fortnight from the effects of a crash, when he fell into the Poperinghe Canal, but was soon hard at work again. During the German Offensive of 1918 he was invaluable in bringing back information as to the latest position of the enemy, flying in all weathers, and his information was always proved to be accurate. I commanded 23 Squadron (Spads) for 18 months and should place Allen easily in the first six best pilots I had. He is a very sober, steady and keen officer.
