Mrs Swan is asking if James can find out anything about H Bateman, late of the Royal Naval Air Service. Describes himself as ‘bald headed, dithery, crocked up, palpitation, dim of sight and thirsty, what a life!’ [n.d.] Copy letter from J B Allen to his father T C Allen; I made some enquiries at the Air Ministry about H Bateman, but they were unable to trace him’[6 Sep 1927] Part of a letter from T C Allen describing a cricket match [partly illegible] [n.d.] Copy letter from J B Allen to his father T C Allen; I was recommended for a post as Civilian Technical Officer at Halton Camp although so far have heard nothing further…The Anglo Persian job has fallen through ‘I have since found out that I tackled the job in altogether the wrong manner. The fellow who interviews applicants wants them to talk and behave as if they had a private income of at least £1000 a year.’[16 Oct 1927] Letter from T C Allen to his son James Bernard Allen: I have been so very ill I couldn’t write any letters. Mrs Swan got all particulars from the RAF and it turned out satisfactorily, he’s a good driver and there has never been one thing wrong with the car since he came….I am so sorry you are not fixed up yet, it must be a worry to you and Nora. I think its hard that there should be so little chance it seems in this country’. [21 Oct 1927]
