    In the County of Bedford – Petty Sessional Division of Luton. The 20th day of December One thousand eight Hundred and Ninety- nine. The information of Frederick Halsey of Whipsnade in the County of Bedford who (upon oath) states that John Lines of the Parish of Studham in the said County, on the 19th day of December instant at Deadmonsey Wood in the Parish of Whipsnade by night to wit about the hour of 5.30 in the night of the said day unlawfully entered and was in certain enclosed land there situate in the occupation of Arthur Macnamara Esquire with a certain engine to wit a gun for the purpose of then and there taking game to wit pheasant by night.

    The Informant Frederick Halsey saith: - I am Keeper to Sir Blundell Maple who has the shooting over Deadmonsey [Deadmansey] Wood. Yesterday evening about 5.30 I heard a shot in the Wood. I went to the end of the ride. I saw John Lines fire a gun up a tree. He walked close up to me. I took hold of his jacket and said “Jack its you is it” He said” Get away from me else I’ll shoot you” He put his loaded gun within six inches of my face. I stood and he walked away and shot again when about 12 yards away. He shot three more times as he went through the Wood. This morning I found pheasants feathers at the place where he had the first two shots. In margin – This is the document marked (A) referred to in the annexed declaration. To the Constables of the Division of Luton and to all other Peace Officers in the said County of Bedford. Whereas Information hath this day been laid before the undersigned one of her Majesty’s Justices of the Peace in and for the said County of Bedford for that John Lines on the 19th day of December 1899 at the Parish of Whipsnade aforesaid, by night to wit about the hour of 5.30 in the night of the said day unlawfully entered and was in certain enclosed land there situate in the occupation of Arthur Macnamara Esquire with a certain engine to wit a gun for the purpose of then and there taking game to wit pheasants by night.
