    Abstract of Title of Thomas, 2nd Viscount Hampden to estates in Bedfordshire with a brief family tree showing Thomas, 1st Barn Trevor, died 1730 and his four children: Thomas, 2nd Baron (died 1753); John, 3rd Baron (died 1764), Robert 4th Baron and 1st Viscount Hampden (died 1783), Richard, Bishop of Durham, (died unmarried 1771) and the child of the 2nd Baron, Elizabeth, who married Charles Spencer, the future 3rd Duke of Marlborough; a daughter (unnamed) of the 3rd Baron and the sons of the 4th Baron – Thomas, 2nd Viscount Hampden and John (“living and married but no issue”) (I) Lease and Release of 26-27 April 1708 Parties: (i) Lewis Dyve, esquire (son and heir of Lewis Dyve late of Bromham, deceased) and Christiana, his wife; (ii) Sir Thomas Trevor, Lord Chief Justice of Common Pleas; (iii) Henry Bendish, gentleman; John Grubb, gentleman Operative Part: - (i) owed £5,713/13/11 mortgage principal and interest to (ii); - (ii) paid £15,600/8/7 to (i); - (i) conveyed the Manors of Bromham to (iii) Habendum - to (iii) in trust for (ii) for ever Covenant - by (i) to acknowledge a fine sur conizance de droit come ceo etc. (II) Bargain and Sale of 27 April 1708 Parties: (i) Lewis Dyve, esquire (son and heir of Lewis Dyve late of Bromham, deceased) and Christiana, his wife; (ii) Sir Thomas Trevor, Lord Chief Justice of Common Pleas; (iii) Henry Bendish, gentleman; John Grubb, gentleman Operative Part: - (ii) gave £21,394/2/6 to (i); - (iii) gave 5/- to (i); - (i), by nomination of (ii), granted the Manors of Bromham to (iii) in trust for (ii) Enrolled in Chancery on 28 April 1708 (III) Hilary Term 6 Anne fine sur conizance de droit come ceo etc. between Henry Bendish and John Grubb, plaintiffs and Lewis Dyve and Christiana, his wife, deforciants (IV) R6/7/1/1 (V) R6/7/1/2 (VI) Act of Parliament of 30 George II “An Act for discharging John, Lord Trevor, executor of Thomas, Lord Trevor, deceased from the sum of eight thousand eight hundred pounds agreed by the said Thomas, Lord Trevor to be laid out in the purchase of lands and for confirming the application made by the said John, Lord Trevor of the said eight thousand eight hundred pounds towards the discharge of ten thousand pounds charged on the Manor of Bromham and other estates late of Thomas, Lord Trevor in the County of Bedford” Reciting: - R6/7/1/1; - marriage settlement of 20 May 1732 between (1) Charles Spencer, 5th Earl of Sunderland [later 3rd Duke of Marlborough]; (2) Thomas, 2nd Baron Trevor and Elizabeth Trevor his daughter; (3) John, later 3rd Baron Trevor and Peter Burrell, esquire; (4) William, 1st Viscount Bateman and Nicholas Clagett, Bishop of Saint David’s reciting the intended marriage between Charles and Elizabeth and that Charles then became entitled by right of Elizabeth to £10,000 secured for a term of 1,000 years in R6/7/1/1 limited to John Borrett, Peter White (then dead) and Edward Virgoe secured on manors and estates in Bedfordshire. Operative Part, inert alia: Thomas, 2nd Baron Trevor covenanted that if the marriage took place that he, John Borrett and Edward Virgoe would assign to (4) the manors and estates in Bedfordshire for 1,000 years upon trusts for raising the £10,000 portion for Elizabeth; - indenture of 26 June 1732 between (1) John Borrett and Edward Virgoe; (2) Thomas, 2nd Baron Trevor; (3) Charles Spencer, 5th Earl of Sunderland and Elizabeth, his wife; (4) William, 1st Viscount Bateman and Nicholas Claggett, Bishop of Saint David’s witnessing (1) by direction of (2) and (3) assigned to (4) the Bedfordshire manors and estates for 1,000 years upon trusts to secure Elizabeth’s £10,000 portion; - Edward Virgoe died in October 1737 having appointed his son Edward (since dead) and daughter Alice (since dead) and Frances Virgoe executor and executrices and that his will was proved by Frances in PCC; - William, 1st Viscount Bateman died on 19 November 1744 and Nicholas, Bishop of Saint David’s died on 8 December 1746 having made his brother Samuel Claggett (since dead) and Daniel Gell, esquire, his executors who proved his will in PCC; - Thomas, 2nd Baron Trevor refused to accept the houses and land of his father in Camberwell [Surrey] in satisfaction of the £8,800 residue of £10,000 and covenanted with his father for it to be invested and it was placed by him at interest by 2nd and 3rd Barons Trevor together with £1,200 which was the money of Ann Trevor, their sister, making a mortgage loan of £10,000 to Henry Skilling or Skylling, esquire secured on the Manor of Fosbury and land in Fosbury, Upper Fosbury, Nether Fosbury, Chute, Crofton and Titcomb [Wiltshire] and that a decree of Chancery to foreclose on the mortgage was later obtained giving the security to them in default of payment of £12,859/15/8; - Thomas, 2nd Baron Trevor died on 22 March 1753 intestate, administration of his estate being granted to Elizabeth, Duchess of Marlborough entitling them to as much of the £12,859/15/8 as became due for interest on the £8,800 and so the security descended to Elizabeth in trust to secure £8,800 to John, 3rd Baron Trevor and £1,200 to Ann Trevor; - John, 3rd Baron Trevor and the Duke and Duchess of Marlborough had sold the Manor of Fosbury and its attendant lands in Wiltshire for £10,000 by lease and release of 18-19 May 1756 between (1) John, 3rd Baron Trevor and Ann Trevor; (2) Duke and Duchess of Marlborough; (3) John, 4th Duke of Bedford, Charles, 2nd Viscount Fane and Robert Butcher, esquire; - on the death of Thomas, 2nd Baron Trevor the manors of Bromham and the Bedfordshire estates passed to his brother John, 3rd Baron Trevor; - Thomas Trevor, nephew of Thomas, 1st Baron Trevor and John Trevor, son of John Morley Trevor, to whom 1st Baron Trevor had devised an estate to be purchased with the £8,800 were both dead without male heirs; - Charles Duke of Marlborough fathered several sons and daughters on Elizabeth Trevor and appointed £10,000 to be raised as a portion for his youngest daughter Elizabeth Herbert, Countess of Pembroke and John, 3rd Baron Trevor applied the £8,800 towards payment of this portion borrowing the remaining £1,200 on mortgage from Samuel Grubb of Saint Clement Danes [Middlesex], esquire charged on the Bedfordshire estates which had since been paid off Operative Part (inter alia): - the Manors of Bromham and Bedfordshire estates were freed from the sum of £8,800, part of the portion of the Duchess of Marlborough but remained security for the £1,200 and settled on Samuel Grubb (VII) R6/7/1/3 (VIII) Common Recovery of Trinity Term 8 George III in which Walter Gibbon was demandant, Thomas Middleton tenant, John, 3rd Baron Trevor first vouchee, Thomas Hampden second vouchee and Thomas Francis Martin common vouchee (IX) Assignment of 5 April 1769 between (1) Samuel Grubb and (2) Thomas Middleton reciting that £1,200 remained owing to (1) and witnessing that (1) assigned the debt and security to (2) (X) Indorsement on (IX) in which Thomas Middleton acknowledged that the £1,200 was the proper money of Thomas, 2nd Viscount Hampden (XI) Deed poll indorsed on (IX) reciting that Robert, 1st Viscount Hampden had agreed to pay £1,200 to Thomas, 2nd Viscount Hampden and take an assignment of his right and interest in it and that it had been agreed to retain the term of 1,000 years for 2nd Viscount Hampden but in trust got Robert, 1st Viscount Hampden and witnessing the same (XII) R6/7/1/4 (XIII) Lease and Release of 2-3 April 1792 between (1) Thomas, 2nd Viscount Hampden and (2) George Brooks of Green Street, Saint George Hanover Square reciting that (1) owed £20,000 to (2) for loans and that (1) had agreed to pay interest at 5% from then on and witnessing (inter alia) that (1) released to (2) subject to equity of redemption (a) the Manors of Bromham Bowells, Wakes and Brays with lands in Bromham, Biddenham, Kempston and Stevington; (b) Bromham Manor house formerly in the occupation of Lewis Dyve; (c) a holme [island] called Hogg Holm of 3 acres formerly in the occupation of Lewis Dyve; (d) cottages formerly in the occupation of Miles Morris; Septimus Tompkins, Widow Wit and Ann Dowdey; (e) Savages Close of pasture containing 7 acres; (f) Barn Pasture containing 70 acres with a barn; (g) Ox Yards containing 2 acres; (h) Lake Meadow containing 33 acres,2 roods; (i) Lake Meadow containing 20 acres; (j) Twenty Acres Meadow containing 20 acres; (k) farm house and land containing 225 acres, 20 perches in Bromham formerly in the occupation of Samuel Bodington; (l) farm house and land containing 116 acres, 2 roods in Bromham formerly in the occupation of George White; (m) Vine Inn and land containing 70 acres, 4 roods [71 acres] in Bromham and Kempston formerly in the occupation of William Staines; (n) land of 98 acres, 4 roods [99 acres] in Bromham and Stevington formerly in the occupation of Thomas Freeman; (o) messuage and four water mills [i.e. four pairs of stones] in Bromham and land containing 25 acres, 2 roods in Bromham, Biddenham and Kempston formerly in the occupation of Thomas Brown; (p) close of pasture in Bromham formerly in the occupation of Robert Pake containing 12 acres, 2 roods; (q) farmhouse and land of 171 acres in Bromham formerly in the occupation of George Read; (r) Spurge Meadow and Spine Meadow cont together 22 acres formerly in the occupation of John Poole; (s) two messuages and land containing 154 acres, 1 rood in Bromham formerly in the occupation of John Yeate; (t) closes of land containing 78 acres, 2 roods in Bromham formerly in the occupation of William Asplane; (u) messuage and land in Bromham containing 25 acres, 6 roods [26 acres, 2 roods] formerly in the occupation of Richard Thead; (v) farmhouse and land of 59 acres, 2 roods in Bromham formerly in the occupation of Joseph Phillips; (w) Elsons Close formerly in the occupation of George Woodhill; (x) messuage and land containing 64 acres, 4 roods [65 acres] in Bromham formerly in the occupation of Humphrey Pake; (y) Old Stone Pitts formerly in the occupation of John Fowler containing 4 acres; (z) “Close of Saint Foy” called Leyside formerly in the occupation of Henry Knight containing 8 acres; (aa) closes cont 55 acres in Bromham formerly in the occupation of Henry Knight; (ab) two cottages and land containing 47 acres, 6 roods [48 acres, 2 roods] in Bromham formerly in the occupation of Henry Peacock; (ac) cottage and orchard formerly in the occupation of Edward Honor containing 2 roods; (ad) cottage and 1 rood of land formerly in the occupation of John King; (ae) cottage and 2 roods of land formerly in the occupation of John Smith; (af) cottage or smith’s shop and forge formerly in the occupation of William Allen; (ag) cottage formerly in the occupation of Thomas Brown, labourer; (ah) cottage formerly in the occupation of Lewis Crouch and (1) released to (2) the reversion in fee of the settlement made in R6/7/1/3 to the use of (2) in trust (XIV) deed poll of 8 June 1793 by George Brooks reciting (XIII) and that £8,735 and interest was in trust for Sarah Johnson of Upper Brook Street, Saint George Hanover Square and was the proper money of George Brooks and that 2nd Viscount Hampden had paid off £1,000 from the £20,000 mortgage so that there remained £10,265 and interest and reciting that this had been paid by John Trevor [later 3rd Viscount Hampden] and witnessing that George Brooks should retain the security in trust for John Trevor (XV) Marriage settlement of 27 May 1805 between (1) Thomas, 2nd Viscount Hampden; (2) Jane Maria Brown of Edinburgh, spinster; (3) Sir David Wedderburn of Ballendean [Perth], baronet and Sir Matthew White Ridley of Blayden [Northumberland], baronet; (4) Thomas Noel, 2nd Viscount Wentworth and Greenwood Fothergill of Upper Grosvenor Square [Middlesex], esquire in which (1) charged all estates in R6/7/1/3 with payment of an annuity of £500 to (2) for her life as jointure and with payment of £10,000 portions for the younger children, if any, of their marriage and limiting a term of 99 years to secure the jointure to (3) and 1,000 year to (4) to secure the portions - “The marriage has since taken effect but there are no issue of the marriage at present” (XVI) deed of 24 February 1802 endorsed on (XIII) in which George Brooks acknowledged payment by 2nd Viscount Hampden of £8,735
