    Thomas Smith: whilst he was standing on the corner by the Black Swan he saw the prisoner insult several male and female inhabitant of the Shefford. As constable he thought it is duty to take the prisoner into custody and accordingly did so. Upon the prisoner promising to leave the town he gave him his liberty. 10 or 15 minutes later the prisoner returned and again conducted himself in a rebellious manner by frightening several young women before him. He apprehended the prisoner upon which the prisoner struck him on the shoulder. He had every reason to suppose the blow was intended for his face.
