- TitleLetter from N Dermott Harding, Archives Room, Bristol re. decision not to provide a bindery there…’I thank you most sincerely for your kind interest & help. The advice & opinions of one who thoroughly understands the problems of this kind of work come as a real aid, since so far I have met no one here to whom an Archivist’s task is clear or very intelligible in all its branches, though they are good enough to entrust me with complete charge which has their help & support whenever needed…I have had the Professor of Chemistry from the University down here & we have been making a careful series of hygrometer tests for dampness. We have established the fact that no storage room for records should ever have more than 60% moisture in the atmosphere. Parchment absorbs about 5% of its weight in moisture in a room of this %age But if you aim at dryer than this it tends to render leather rather too brittle in course of time.’ Refers to enclosure which was not present but letter was attached to notes in Fowler’s hand on mildew on book materials so it is likely that these were taken from the enclosure, which was then returned.
