- Scope and ContentFrederick Clark: he was the son of George Clark, a tailor of Hasting Street, Luton. About 8pm on 9 April he was in Wellington Street against the shop of Mr Johnson the grocer. He saw the prisoner come up Wellington Street and try to take a box of figs from near the shop door. The prisoner did not take it then but that made him watch the prisoner and the prisoner came back a couple of minutes afterwards and took the box of figs. The prisoner went up Wellington Street and into Peel Street. He went into Mr Johnson’s shop and told Mr Moorcroft and they went after the prisoner and caught him in Peel Street. The prisoner dropped the box on the ground. It was not open. George Morecraft: he was the assistant to Mr George Mercer Johnson of Wellington Street. He had been in the shop on 9 April and the witness Clark came in and fro what he was told he went with Clark and saw the prisoner go towards Peel Street with a box of figs. He ran after the prisoner and caught him in Peel Street. The prisoner was sitting down when he got to him and he put the figs under his coat on the ground. He took hold of the prisoner and took him back to the shop along with the figs. After they got back to the shop the prisoner was given into the custody of PC Shrimpton. The figs were worth 9d. PC John Shrimpton: on 9 April he was in Wellington Street and he saw the prisoner outside the shop of Mr Johnson. The prisoner was then given into his custody and he charged him with stealing the box of figs. The prisoner said he did not know anything about them and had been coming to give himself up on a waistcoat. Statement of the accused: nothing.
